Where to start.

Give paperwork a next step

Choose the task your desk needs to support today. Leave room for the equipment and documents you actually need, and put everyday supplies within reach. Separate incoming paperwork into action, keep and dispose groups. Record a next task and due date for documents needing a response; a tray alone does not finish the job. Check ownership and retention requirements before discarding records, and use an appropriate secure-disposal method for confidential information. At the end of work, return supplies, record tomorrow’s first action and leave a useful area clear.

Clear first, then clean

Move documents before applying cleaning products. Follow the furniture or device manufacturer’s directions, keep liquids away from ports and let surfaces dry before replacing papers. Keep a clear route around the chair. When clutter spreads beyond the desk, choose one small household area and give each belonging a useful destination. A short reset works better when storage is convenient and everyone sharing the space understands the labels. Review what drifts out of place and adjust the arrangement to suit the way you work.
